paper trail distro is closing [07 Jan 2010|06:25pm]

zine_scene

[ciaradistro]
paper trail distro is open again now that the holidays are over, but the break i took made me realize that the distro isn't where i want to put my energy anymore. i knew when i started out seven years ago that the distro had an expiration date--i couldn't keep running it forever. & i think the time has come to shut it down. it's been a while since i really enjoyed the process of running a zine distro, even though i had many good years of reading great zines, meeting interesting people, & satisfying a demand for zines. but all good things must come to and end.

the distro is currently still open. i want to try to sell down as many of the zines i still have as i possibly can. & i have A LOT. though they are going fast--i've sold out of like twelve different zines just in the last few hours. i am doing my best to keep up with everything & make sure the catalogue stays updated. i am only selling zines now--i won't be doing any re-orders or taking on new zines. what i have is what i have, & when it's gone...it's gone. that is why i am sending out this announcement: if you want zines, i suggest that you act quickly, because i expect stuff to just keep selling out.

everything is pretty much the same. the catalogue is up, the shopping cart is up, & you can order stuff, same as always. if you happen to order something that is sold out, i will refund you for the amount of the sold out zine(s).

you can even still subscribe to the distro, though i have changed it up a little. i expect the process of closing down the distro to take a few months...maybe even a year, once the initial feeding frenzy dies down. subscriptions now cost $30 in the u.s. & $40 everywhere else. they're good for two packages over the course of six months (i'm currently accepting subscriptions for april & july). each package will contain ten zines. if the distro closes before your subscription period ends, you will be refunded for whatever packages you did not receive. this is also true for current subscribers.

i'm also going to be introducing some new postage-paid collections as the catalogue whittles away. they'll be up on the distro site. i'm also still posting interviews while i'm closing down. an interview with maranda elizabeth, of "telegram ma'am" zine, will be going up in the next few days.

once the distro is closed, i expect to continue to contribute to zine culture in various ways. i will probably still make zines. but my time as a distributer is drawing to a close.

xo, ciara

Help us finish Zine World #28 [06 Jan 2010|09:37pm]

zine_scene

[whysoblue]
Zine World #28 will be released at the end of January.

This issue should have been out months ago but has been delayed repeatedly for a number of reasons. Because all the content in this issue was collected and written in the summer and early fall of 2009, we are giving ourselves the rest of this month to update it a bit. We're writing some new reviews and we'll be expanding the review section.

We'd like your help in pulling together updates for some of the other sections. If you have something you'd like to contribute, please email it to jerianne at undergroundpress.org no later than January 15. Please send us your:
* address changes
* classified ads for zines, distros, or DIY projects (50 words or less)
* display ads (see our ad rates)
* new listings for zine review zines/website or zine libraries
* listings for zine events happening in the first half of 2010
* your stories, comments, or feedback about zine events that happened in 2009
* listings for zine resources, postal tips, etc.

See you in your mailbox soon!

You can rage at me all you want.
You can block me.
You can try to convince me I'm furious at you.
But it's not going to work.
I'm not mad, and you're being petty and stubborn.
I will still be here when you get over yourself.

Coal Zine [03 Jan 2010|09:49pm]

zine_scene

[rawzanahorias]
Hi! My name is Dea and I'm an organizer/journalist working in southern West Virginia with campaigns fighting to end mountaintop removal mining. This is a new project I'm working on. You can email me at darlingswillbekilled@gmail.com

Coal Zine (working title!) is going to be a comprehensive booklet/pamphlet/zine about coal struggles & resistance in Appalachia. The idea is that it will be a toolkit for someone interested in learning more/getting involved but who isn't going to buy an expensive, academic book or spend tons of time on anti-MTR web sites. Something slim you can hold in your hands and get a 101 about all of the shit we're fighting.

A lot of my other ideas for anthology zines, ranging from feminism in punk rock to radical mental health to food, have sunk due to a dearth of submissions, but I think a lot of the written material for this project already exists, so I'm not anticipating running in to that problem. At the same time, I want to open this up to suggestions and submissions. Below is a preliminary outline, please feel free to comment!

Article Brainstorm:
-MTR 101 w/ diagram
-The coal cycle
-Interviews w/ local activists
-History of Organized Resistance: unions, early fight against strip mining, early fight against MTR, Mountain Justice, Climate Ground Zero & other current campaigns
-Cultural sensitivity & coalfield organizing
-How to get involved
-Personal essays/comic strips (anyone want to write/make one?)

Zine events in Edinburgh, Scotland [03 Jan 2010|05:25pm]

zine_scene

[primitivepeople]
I was out and about in Edinburgh today, when I passed the Collective Gallery in Cockburn Street. They were advertising events called Fanzine Sundays, and I saw this info in the windows:

This is about all the info I could find on these events, as the Collective Gallery website doesn't seem to make mention of them. Has anyone been to any of these? I'm keen to get along myself, and as and when I do, I'll report back, of course. :) Any other Scottish zine people out there keen to go along? Do get in touch if you are.

Ex Machina #1 & #2 Available Online [02 Jan 2010|10:55pm]

zine_scene

[rawzanahorias]
The first two issues of my perzine, Ex Machina, are now available through Starfiend Distro & Click Clack Distro. Below are the reviews ClickClack distro wrote of each. You can also get copies of one or both by sending $4 to my PO Box:

Dea G.
PO Box 175
Rock Creek, WV
25174

Ex Machina #1 is a wonderful travel zine written during a summer of studying Spanish in Chile and Argentina. Dea speaks of the apartment where she stayed in Vina del Mar and how she explored the town from broken Spanish breakfast conversations with her hosts. She includes a brief history of Chile and the effects that Pinochet’s regime had on the country. Activist art graces the walls of an empty prison called Ex-Carcel which inspires Dea to reflect on the prison system.

Ex Machina #2: This issue of Ex Machina is subtitled “Live Free or Diner,” compiling memories in the various diners Dea has visited. It starts with the hometown diner section paying homage to Westchester County, New York. All of the basic diner nostalgia is conjured up in this zine such as the late night travel plans sketched out on the table which never come to fruition, or the insomnia by fault of a bottomless coffee feverishly knitting a new creation. A brief history of the late night lunch wagon and a trip to Kate’s Joint in NYC is nestled within the pages of Ex Machina #2. The musing “Home Fries” explains the nostalgia and comfort a good greasy spoon brunch will bring.

LICKING STARS OFF CEILINGS TWELVE BITCHES [02 Jan 2010|09:04pm]

[lickingstarsoff]
licking stars off ceilings twelve: reviving punkrock

1/4 size, $2.00 +$1.00 for mailing

subtitled 'reviving punkrock'. it's kinda like a split with myself because it has 2 covers, and you flip it over half way through. it's about punkrock, what punk means to me, how punk has turned to shit and how i want to save it. it has lots of pictures of my punkrock grrrl heroes like patti smith, karen o and courtney love. i write about nancy spungen, her murder, and how i want a punkrock in memory of her and not in memory of her murderer. it was written just before my 23rd birthday, and the new year, and i reflect on my past year and my goals for the future. the zine is about reclaiming punk, staying alive, feeling really intense feelings. it's also about my boyfriend and being in love, cuz well, i'm a hopeless romantic. i'm really proud of how this issue turned out.

Call for Submissions: Wheat Paste, a Guerilla Art Zine [02 Jan 2010|12:08pm]

zine_scene

[saellys]
Wheat Paste is a new zine about guerilla art. It will be one part showcase for found guerilla art, one part how-to, and one part rumination on the importance of non-corporate messages and images in public spacs.

For this zine, guerilla art is defined as anonymously produced pieces of intentional creations in public places, which include, but are not necessarily limited to, images, messages, and combinations thereof, public gardens that are not maintained by a government or corporation, three-dimensional works that augment existing structures such as wrapped buildings, and performance art like Improv Everywhere. HOWEVER, if you partake in or advocate a form of guerilla art not on that list, please consider submitting an article that defends and promotes it as true guerilla art. The purpose of guerilla art is to change things, after all, and what good is it if we get bogged down in what it's "supposed" to be?

Like its subject matter, copies of Wheat Paste will be left in public places. Contributors will receive three copies to do with as they wish. Submissions will be published anonymously; if you must be credited, please include a pseudonym with your submission. The first issue will be quarter size (4.25" x 5.5"). Submissions may be e-mailed to wheatpastezine@gmail.com or snail mailed to Hannah, PO Box 332213, Murfreesboro, TN 37133.
